Cirque du Soleil- IRIS!

IRIS,IRIS…. IRIS!  This is one review in which all I want to say is GO SEE IRIS!  Then- you pack up for family and go watch IRIS.

I’ve only been to a few Cirque de Soleil shows and it seems that every time I go, it get’s better and better and Way. More. WOW!  It manages to take my breath away every single time.   The show is making the Kodak Theater its home for the next 10 years. Yes, 10 years!  If there is one show to see during the holidays (or anytime ) is IRIS.

This new production from Cirque du Soleil is a lyrical, fanciful, kinetic foray into the seventh art. Bringing together dance, acrobatics, live video, filmed sequences and animation, the show takes spectators on a fantastic voyage through the history of cinema and its genres, taking them into the heart of the movie-making process. From illustration to animation, black and white to colour, silent films to talkies, fixed shots to swooping camera movements, spectators witness the poetic construction/deconstruction of this art as an object and as a way of transcending reality.

The whole set/mood/atmosphere is very old Hollywood.   From the beginning to the very end, IRIS has you engaged, mesmerized,  gasping and clapping with disbelieve of what the human body is able to do!  It’s amazing how the artist’s body twists and turns with grace and elegance.   At times, there is so much going on during a scene, that you truly don’t know where to look.  From stunning trapeze stunts to an elaborate, fast pace “rooftop” scene, you are smiling and wide-eyed the whole time.

The Kodak Theater adds a beautiful “Hollywood” ambiance that makes IRIS unforgettable.  I recommend this show to anyone who loves to have a great time.  I’ll tell you one funny story about my evening that night.  The first half the show was- like I said.. amazing!  I even tweeted that it’s a must see and that it’s totally family friendly.  Then the second half started and I was immediately compelled to delete my tweet! ha ha ha…  It’s not too raunchy but there are a few (very few) scenes that are not for kids.  Little ones I mean. Having said that- I think the show is great for teenagers.

IRIS would make a fantastic date night, girls night out, birthday gift or anniversary present.  Even if its to just spend an evening in Hollywood.  You will not be disappointed.
