Carbon Monoxide Alarms {Local Giveaway}
A new state law, here in California, went into effect, which requires all existing single family homes to install carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless poison that can only be detected with an alarm. There have been way to many stories in the news on how entire families have died because of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. It’s so heartbreaking when you hear how these tragedies could have been prevented.

CO is a colorless, odorless gas that one cannot detect and is responsible for an average of 450 deaths and more than 20,000 emergency room visits in the U.S. annually. The California Air Resources Board cites 30 to 40 avoidable deaths annually statewide from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning.
Yet, many of us Californians apparently are not in a hurry to add this protection to their homes. According to the survey, only about half (53 percent) will equip their home within three months after the law takes effect. Some 14 percent plan to install alarms within six to 12 months, 4 percent within one to two years, 14 percent don’t know and remarkably 11 percent just won’t install CO alarms.

I have a confession to make. I don’t have a CO alarm. I never have! I always think about getting one as I see them at the stores, but brought myself to actually buying it. Now, I feel bad about not buying it! CO sources may include, but are not limited to, heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, appliances or cooking devices using coal, wood, petroleum products or other fuels emitting CO as a by-product of combustion.
With proper alarm coverage (the NFPA recommends one in every bedroom and sleeping area), CO poisoning is a completely avoidable incident. With that said, I have a giveaway for you!

I have all the emergency numbers posted on a visible place, we test the fire alarms to make sure they work, we have fire extinguishers and we have a disaster kit
We ensure all of our smoke detectors are working
We have an emergency kit prepared in our garage
We actually have one downstairs but I’d love to have one upstairs where our bedrooms are
